The extravagant mansion's Beaux Arts design by Richard Morris Hunt was influenced by Petite Trianon at The Palace of Versailles, France and the structure was built between 1888-92 in Newport, Rhode Island for William Vanderbilt and his wife at a total cost of $11 million. Marble House has 200,000 cubic square feet of marble and spectacular ornate interior rooms. It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. A Chinese Tea House is located along side the home on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
