This 381-square mile island is the second largest of the Galapagos Islands and its capital is Puerto Ayora, which has the largest population of any other town on the islands with more than 12,000 residents. Santa Cruz Island was settled in the early 20th century by Americans and Europeans. Its name means "Holy Cross" in Spanish. This Ecuadorian island is a very popular tourist spot and has many attractions including the Charles Darwin Research Station, Tortuga Bay, Tortoise Reserve, Black Turtle Cove, Dragon Hill, Twin Craters and El Mirador.
