About University of Alaska Museum of the North

Located in the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, the Museum of the North features 1.4 million artifacts covering archaeology, birds, earth sciences, ethnology/history, fine arts, fish/marine invertebrates, insects, mammals, plants and documentary film. University of Alaska Museum of the North's unique building that opened in 1980 was designed by architect Joan Soranno and GDM/HGA to represent the state of Alaska. The university museum dates back to 1926. Highlights include a 36,000-year-old mummified bison, the state's largest public collection of gold, ancient ivory relics and an Alaskan art collection spanning 2,000 years.
