This 27-mile Ontario ship canal links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie enabling large cargo ships to travel down the Niagara Escarpment. The Welland Canal was first constructed from 1824-30 and replaced, modified and restored throughout the years. William Hamilton Merritt is credited with the idea of the Welland Canal that is used by more than 3,000 vessel every year carrying about 40 million metric tons of cargo.
